A quick guide to making it on Gaia

Are you new, but curious as to how you can earn enough gold to afford that item that you want? I will not go into it in detail, but here are some basic steps that can help you out.

When you are starting out, there are many ways to make a good deal of gold:

- Do the beginner quest This gets you a good sum of gold to start out with and some items too. You can sell them later if you don’t like them.

- Daily Chance: This gives out a sum of gold and some items every day. Although it’s usually junk, sometimes you get items which you can actually use or sell for gold. Sofar, I’ve gotten as much as 250g from one click on the Daily Chance.

- Play Games Puzzles give out a good deal of money, especially for the harder puzzles.

- Post, Comment, Make Journal Entries, Pollwhore I make roughly 1000g a day just from posting around in the forums, surfing, voting on polls, making journal entries, and commenting on profiles. In just 10-12 days of doing that, I would have enough to buy a sealed letter of the current month without spending my own money. razz

- Sell your unwanted items If you don’t have a vending or trading pass yet, you can sell some of your unwanted items gained from daily chance in the shops. Generally, they go for less than the cost. But once you have 1500g for both a vending and trading pass, you can begin selling and trading your items for more gold. :3

- If you can, buy sealed letters
Some people fund their entire Gaia accounts by buying sealed letters for $2.50 US each. But I would not reccomend this if you do not have the cash to spare yourself, or your parents are not OK with it. I don’t fund my account with these, but I usually buy two a month with my own money. Items often go up in worth over time, and are a good investment. Plus, they’re addictive and fun to collect!

- Set up a quest thread.
If there’s an item you are questing for, set up a thread for it. Don’t beg and plead. Instead, place a link in your profile.

- Participate in raffles, giveaways, and contests
This is a great way to earn wanted items and gold. Although there is a good deal of competition. I look for giveaways that include items I want, and I also participate in Art Contests.

- Set up a shop or auction
This is, in my opinion, the best way to make gold. I go into the art shop process more in a later post. But this is how I fund my Gaia account, while also gaining some experience and giving me a chance to practice new techniques.

- Vend (buy low, sell high)
Once you earn roughly 10-30k from using the above methods you can begin vending by buying monthly collectible items for cheap and then selling them for higher. If you don’t have any marketable talents, this is the best way to make riches in a short amount of time.

Ways not to get gold and items

- Buying gold for real money
Do not use other sites to buy gold. This is against the TOS and can get you banned. You can buy Gaia Cash to purchase monthly collectibles or items in the shops for your avatar however.

- Hacking, Spamming, Asking for Passwords
Again, another bannable offense. Don’t steal from those who work for their money. It just shows laziness and a lack of respect for others and yourself.

- Unsolicited Begging
Gaians hate beggars. The more you beg and annoy, the less likely we are to give our gold and items away. There are lots of people out there who donate… but there are ways to go about getting a donation tactfully:

a. Be kind, courteous, and literate. Nice and intelligent people are a rarity on Gaia. Therefore, you will be more prone to getting a donation. Sure it’s more work to type out your words, but it goes a long way.

b. Mention offhandedly, or bring up a quest when the discussion calls for it. This requires a bit of tact, but I’ve actually gotten items that I want this way.

c. If someone inquires during an above discussion, you can send them to your donation thread. Don’t just randomly spam people right off the bat. I do this only when one person asks, or I ask others if they have their own threads or quests, and we share them as a form of networking.

d. Show interest in what others want too. Don’t be self-centered. Even if you really aren’t that interested in what others want, pretend. razz Usually, I am… but some people aren’t. But you can at least put up a very good facade that you do in fact, care. Try to help them out a bit too. You might be surprised to see the favor returned several fold in return later on by them or another stranger.

e. A little bit of kindness goes a long way.

What else does Gaia have to offer?

Gaia is continuously expanding, with a lot of features for its users. It has a wide variety of forums, of which anime is only one (but yes, it still calls itself an anime community. It started out like that). It has an ever-expanding set of minigames. It also has Gaia Towns, where you can have a furnishable house, collect particular game items, and have real-time interactions with other users present.

What kinds of clothes and items are there?

Ah, therein lies the rub. There are six general types of clothes/items on Gaia. The first is commons. These are the stuff sold in stores. Basically, if you have enough money, you can get them. Their prices stay the same, and Gaia never runs out of these items.

The second is rares and uncommons. These are clothes and items that you get during the treasure chest or the gift box random event. Random event, you ask? Yeah. At random times (note the term “random”), you will get a  beside your avvy. Yeah, it looks just like that. It’s accompanied by a flying treasure chest or a flying gift or a glowing pink link. You need to click on these things. If you click on the flying chest or gift, you will get it in your inventory. Then you can open them to get clothes or items that are not found in stores. If you click on a pink link, your gold will go up by 1000. You can buy and sell rares and uncommons in the Exchange and in the Marketplace.

The third is donation items. If you donate at least $2.50 to Gaia, you will get a donation letter in your inventory. It’s unsealed around the end of the month and contains an item that is not found anywhere else in Gaia. Very old donation items are very expensive. The most expensive item on Gaia is the angelic halo, which was the very first donation item. That means the only people who got the halo were those who donated when Gaia was born. And the admins, of course, because they created everything. And people who were lucky enough to get the halo or buy the halo from the first donators. It costs tens of millions of gold. Seriously. That’s a lot of posts and polls XD Donation items are also available through the Marketplace and the Exchange.

The fourth is special occasion items. There are special events in Gaia, such as Christmas caroling, balls, and Olympics. Unique items are released during these events. From experience, most of them are usually not as sought-after as the donation items. They are also available through the Exchange and the Marketplace.

Fifth is game items. Gaia has some mini-games that you could play. Currently, there is fishing, slot machines, and getting bugs/flowers/trash in Gaia Towns. When you have a certain number of particular items from these games, you can have them exchanged for things that you can equip to your avatar. Game items can also be purchased from the Marketplace.

Sixth is prizes. There are particular games that are competitive, in that you and a whole bunch of other Gaians will be jonesin’ for the same prizes. This is the case for fishing and the Art Arena. If you win first, second, or third place, you get a trophy (fishing) or a medal (Art Arena). Note that these prizes are more rare than the items you could acquire using the previous methods. As mentioned before, you have to compete against a lot of other users, and only a certain number of prizes are handed out at a time. People who have won these prizes may sell them through the Exchange or through the Marketplace.

Where do I buy clothes and items?

You can buy clothes and items for your avvy in Gaia shops. There’s a bunch of them scattered all over the place. To find shops, you have to go to the map (don’t worry, when you actually get on Gaia, you’ll find that the map button is in plain view, no matter what part of the site you’re in). The map will then show one city with a bunch of buildings. Hover your mouse over the buildings, and you will see their names. Just click on buildings that say “Shopping.” You will be taken inside that particular shop. Once inside the shop, you can then click on particular articles of clothing or items and view their descriptions and their price. You can also preview how they would look on your avvy. Naturally, you can purchase an article of clothing or item if you have enough gold for it. You will then be able to equip it to your avvy. You can also buy clothes and items from other users. There is a forum called the Exchange (okay, technically, it’s considered a subforum, but okay…), where users sell clothes and items through postings. Some of them ask for a particular asking price, some hold auctions, and some do a combination of both (auction with a reserve price or a buy-it-now price). Users usually go this route if they want a particular item (or items or combination of items and gold) in exchange for the item that they have. If you and the seller agree to a trade, the two of you do the trade through the bank.

There’s also the marketplace. This is sort of like eBay, where you can bid on and/or buy particular clothes and items from other users just by clicking a button. I personally prefer this over the Exchange, because it’s faster. Once you click on the buy button and type in your password, you will get the item (of course, assuming you have enough gold to pay for it). Or once you click on the bid button and type in your password, you are in the auction. And when the auction ends with you as the highest bidder, you automatically pay for the item and then it becomes equippable for you.

And of course, you can also use these methods to sell items that you have :P

What are these customizable avatars?

Sure, you can customize your avatar on some forums. You can choose a picture from the forum’s image gallery. You can also upload a picture to an online image hosting service and edit your forum profile so that picture of yours will become your avatar. On Gaia, however, you get a little stack of pixels in form of a chibi human as your avatar. When you sign up, you get to choose its gender, hairstyle, hair color, eye style, eye color, and mouth configuration. When you’re a new member on Gaia, your avvy has nothing except its white undies and peasant clothes that are incredibly ugly. With gold, you can purchase better clothes and items for your avvy.Oh yeah, and your avvy is usually positioned at the upper right-hand corner of your screen as you navigate through Gaia. So you can admire how good your avvy looks. Or bemoan. Whatever floats your boat.

A Gaia guide (if you are interested)

Choosing Gaia

If you want to be ‘different’ that everyone else, then Gaia is the way to go. She is by far the least played Atlantean civilisation.

She is essentially a defensive civilisation. So if you like Hades defending and Zues’s booming, then she is a nice Atlantean choice for you.

Gaia’s bonuses
___________________________________________________________
Special Bonus:
All buildings are surrounded by Lush Terrain.
Lush terrain can not be built on by enemies.

Bonuses:
Buildings regenerate hitpoints
Fishing ships, Caravans more hitpoints & cheaper
Economic bonuses cheaper

God Power: Gaia’s Forest. Generates a forest, of which you can harvest from and use as a wall. This power is similar to the Dwarven Mine. Also, you can use Gaia’s Forest numerous times in a game.

Technology: Channels Ability. +20% Villager Speed
___________________________________________________________

As most of you would already know, Gaia is a defensive civilisation and her special units are her villagers. Now IMO this makes her harder to play because her military bonus is more indirect than other civilisations. E.G. Kronos specialises in Siege and Myth, well his bonuses are farely direct as you get a discount on these units. However with Gaia, you need to utilise her economic bonuses so that you are constantly ‘ahead’ of your opponent and so you will eventually out-econ, out-number your opponent.
So what does this mean? In order to get a military advantage out of her, you must master her economy. I play Gaia many times in team games and I often find myself ALWAYS with extra resources and I can constantly be getting upgrades. To be honest, I thin she is better in team games and maybe not the nest choice if you just want to constantly win in 1v1. But she is interesting and different, so of you’re ever bored of Oranos or Zues, try Gaia!

Lets start from the beginning.

The Archaic Age

Firstly important to judge your enemy. E.g. don’t risk a late advance if you can see you are up against an aggressive Loki rusher. If you see you are against Egyptian/Hades (generally defensive civs) then GO FOR THE LATER ADVANCE. IT IS ALWAYS WORTH IT.

In archaic, you should:
-Use her forest GP. It’s a great economic and defensive GP, it’s not worth using all four on an organic wall. Use 2 just near your TC (not too close of you know that forest fire will be coming) and 2 around your most forward towers. A forest protected tower will always serve you well. Don’t go to other forests until you’ve chopped down your 2 forests near your TC. If you’ve taken the battle out of your own base, then you may be able to cut down your tower defending forests. But by the time you exhaust your 2 forests near your TC, the regular forests will do you fine, provided you have the wood cutting upgrades.
-Scout your surrounding area well before you send your oracles to find their base. Its more important that you find all the gold mines and settlements, because in the early game your enemy will be trying to take these off you. A good player knows how to beat a defensive player. So don’t let him steal your land!
-In transition to classical: build an economic guild and have a total of 3 houses, put them and your temple around one of your towers (so by now you should have 3 of your 4 towers defended!) in transition, get the 3 econ upgrades for hunting, gold and wood. Unless you see that there is not much hunting on the map, you won’t need husbandry just yet. Remember that it is not as beneficial for Atlanteans! Realise that the cheaper upgrades benefit you in that – they let you get those upgrades earlier than your ally The fact that you save resources is not the only good thing about it!

Against an aggressive player – advance with around 5 on food, 2 on wood and 2 on gold. Aim for a moderate advance time.
Against a more defensive player – GO FOR TWO TC’S! Be very careful how you do this, don’t try to build it too early, you find that your in a mess with wasted TC time and not enough to build a temple. Do it like this – First get 3 on food, one on gold and two on wood, send your 6th to a settlement you want to take, if your think they are going to raid you early, take one that is near you. If you want to be a bit more adventurous, go for one near the centre of the map! After this build another 2-3 citizens, and use you TC builder to put your temple near your 2nd TC. This BO isn’t designed for water however.
This will leave you with a later advance time, but IT’S ALL WORTH IT.
On water its not hard to have a large fishing force early in the game, you’ve got cheaper fishing ships and faster wood gathering!

The classical Age

If you really like Oceanus’s techs and his healing abilities, then by all means, go for it. But on land I highly recommend Leto for the Automaton. Put your TC on repeat build citizen, if you’ve got 2, repeat build them both, your economy BOOMS! Aim to have 5 on food, 6 on wood and 6 on gold before the heroic age. With 2 TC’s this is very easily done. BUT WATCH YOUR POPULATION. I often make the mistake of getting too many citizens and finding myself with a much smaller army than my enemy.

If you’ve put your 2nd TC forward, then put your counter rax here along with your temple. Put up a spider lair near them. With the spiders and the TC fire, your opponent shouldn’t be able to take them down. And this is great because there is nothing worse than losing your rax in classical. With no rax, you have no army production. With no army, you lose.

Get a nice mixture of Katapeltes and Turma, throw in plenty of Automatons too, again the 2 TC’s benefit you (the favour). Use you infantry and Mus to defend your base from raiders, and raid yourself with Turma. Get the tower upgrade too.

Other than this do everything you would normally do in classical. Expand and raid. But again WATCH YOUR POP IT IS CRUCIAL YOU DON’T GET TOO MANY CITIZENS. They take up 3 population remember. Gaia’s archaic tech would be a good idea towards mid-classical age when you can afford it.

By late classical, get the next wood, and gold upgrades from your economic guild., and plow if you need it. You’ll probably need husbandry by now too.

The Heroic Age

This is where you can be really flexible to counter your enemy’s army. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEIA UNLESS YOU HAVE THE ADVANTAGE IN CLASSICAL AND YOU NEED BEHEMOTH TO FINISH YOUR ENEMY OFF. But this is not common.
Put a Hesperides tree near your rax where it cannot be captured by the enemy, if you have plenty of gold, get some dryads, they don’t waste your favour and are a nice addition to your army. Contarius are a nice choice with Theia, they may not be the toughest units but they can be effective when massed against most units except infantry. They are excellent as heroes.
THIS IS THE TIME TO SAVE YOUR FAVOUR. Remember that you want to be always ahead of your enemy, and you’ll find some games you’ll need to get to titan age, so don’t get carried away with Stymphalian Birds, they are a whopping 25 favour. And don’t be stupid and use them as raiders, when separated from an army, they are slaughtered easily. Trust me.

You usually don’t need the third econ upgrades unless you see the game is really going to drag on. Aim for a MAXIMAM of 20 citizens. No more. Try to take at last half of the map now, if you really can’t do it, then go for Titan age ASAP.

I often find myself not long in heroic and I am always surprised at how many resource I have. Aim to get to mythic before your opponent. Don’t forget to upgrade your men however.

The Mythic Age

Before I say anything, a credit to ES for making this age a lot more active in the x pack. It’s a great age! If you see you are taking the map back, go with Atlas. You can overwhelm your enemy with excellent Argus and his mighty Implode. Unless you are desperate for a titan, upgrade all your men to champion and make sure you have at least the second line of armoury upgrades.
Now the different side of the story is if you are stuck inside your base with only 2 of the 6 settlements on the map. Two words. Hekate. Titan.
Put up plenty of fortresses in your base and leave a distinct space for your titan gate to be built. Wall off any major entrances to your base, and get the medium wall upgrade. Keep you econ booming right until that Titan gate GP appears. Place it in that defended spot in your base and call all your villies to it. GET MYTHIC REJUVENTAION. See why you need that favour now? (30 for the Hekate tech, 50 for secrets of the titans). Put your 2nd Hesperides next to the gate.
Bring your army back to defend your Titan gate – obviously.
Make sure you use the shift waypoints to task your citizens back to work after they have built the gate – Your Titan will need some aid if your opponent is also in Mythic. In team games, you titan will give you an advantage on the battlefield, but if it’s a 3v3 or more, the battle WILL GO ON. In a 1v1, once your titan is released GO FORTH AND CRUSH YOUR ENEMY! AND CLAIM THAT LAND AS LAND OF GAIA!
